Sea Core FAQs:
How much do they cost?
Sea Cores range in price. Standard sizes run from $5,000-$30,000 including the pedestal. Custom sizes are quoted individually. There's never an extra charge for customizing the colors of the glass components, and pedestals come in 300 different laminates you can choose from. Please contact me directly for quotes on specific designs.
Picture on the right (with the wine bottle for reference) shows the sizes of:
Small: 6" diameter by 19" height
Medium: 7" diameter by 24" height
Large: 8.5" diameter by 30" height
10" diameter also available but not pictured here
(Price includes glass tube, glass components, and lighted pedestal or base and pump.)
Can you put fish in them?
No. Sea Cores are not suitable for fish! I don't leave very much room inside and the edges of the glass pieces are sharp, so the fish wouldn't be happy or last very long. Also, adding fish will make them high maintenance, and will require you to clean.
How do you keep them clean?
Sea Cores are very easy to maintain: you do not need to change the water. You do not need to clean the cylinder. All you need to do to keep them clean is fill them with distilled water, and add a bit more as the water evaporates. Your Sea Core will remain sparkly clean.
Do NOT use tap water — not even a little tiny bit. Tap water has too many minerals and nutrients, so you will get growth and ugly mineral deposits on your beautiful glass. If you ever have an issue with growth, a little bit of bleach is perfectly safe and should take care of the problem.
Can I get custom colors?
Absolutely, I do custom orders all the time. Some people give me swatches of paint, fabric, or wallpaper, and others just talk to me about colors they like and want to see in their piece. I can work with pretty much anything, and if I am doing a custom piece, I will send you preliminary photos and a final video for approval.
Can you work with my interior designer?
Yes, I love working with interior designers. Some of those projects are the most exciting, because we can build anything. Pool panels, shower walls, and interior columns are just a few examples of the type of work I can do with your designer.
What are they made of?
Sea Cores are made entirely out of glass. Some of it is salvaged. Some of it is purchased art glass I break and fuse in the kiln. I don't add color to the glass components inside the Sea Cores, so I buy the colors I can't find in salvaged. Purchased glass also gives me freedom to mix colors. All the components are hand formed and many are cold-worked as well.
Where do you get the tubes?
Nothing is purchased off the shelf. The tubes are my design and I have them made exclusively for my Sea Cores. The glass for the cylinder is extruded glass tubing I get from Germany. I choose this glass for its excellent optics, clarity, and durability. A glass blower in California assembles each tube for me.
Do you ship or deliver?
If you live locally, I can assemble your piece in my studio and have it ready for you to pick up. If I ship your piece, I will take it apart for packing. But don't worry. Putting it back together again is easy. Your Sea Core will come with detailed instructions, and a movie, showing how your sculpture goes together. Sea Cores also travel well by airplane, and that's an excellent option for larger pieces. Depending on where you live, and how flexible your schedule is, I may be able to deliver and set up your Sea Core personally.
